What does organizing mean to you?

It's one of the most common words used when we work on our homes, but it can have quite a few definitions depending who takes on this task.

It can be putting things back to their original spaces, doing rearrangements, sorting out, declutter, cleaning, or all of them combined.

The tip I want to share today, is to keep in mind that surface areas, should be kept free of things.

Desk, floor, sink, stove - - these surface areas are meant to be the canvas when we operate certain tasks, and not storage for temporary items. Temporary items are very dangerous to keep on surfaces, because they can pile up before we know it, creating a messy home, that discourages us from doing any organizing or tidying.

Messy surfaces are also indications of work in progress. If all of the surfaces have things on them, it just means we have that many pending tasks, and it becomes such a bunch of visual distractions which explains why we feel stressed and anxious even if we're home.

Desk: Take out study/work supplies only when working, and tuck away once finished.

Floor: Kids/pets toys, clothes, etc picked up and placed in proper places when not in use.

Kitchen counter: Remember this surface is reserved for cooking, so nothing irrelevant should be here, and dishes/utensils/cookware should be stored away in drawers/cabinets, or at least neatly if they go on the counter after washing.

Bathroom counter: A difficult one but it's the best to not leave anything on the surface. Instead, place the least amount of absolute essentials, and everything else should go in drawer/under the sink, or vertical shelves.

Chairs/couches: They're for sitting, not your temporary hamper, so don't leave clothes there.

Yes, it can be tough when we don't live alone, but as stated above, if we don't routinely keep at it, mess will then take over. Find the middle ground that best works for you. (Good storage ideas are best friends to keep surfaces free, I'll have more examples in the next posts.)

Here are a couple of examples of surfaces I routinely (at least once a day) restore to blank slate right after use, it gives me a good reset until the next use, and each time I try to enjoy the process by figuring out how I can tidy up most efficiently.

I'm repurposed coffee table as my kids' study table.
Everything is in light color tones to keep the environment nice and bright, for better focus.

Stay tuned for more tricks and inspirations!
