Let's get into the fun part!

I'll now walk us through how to actually downsize your wardrobe, so you'll be on your way to liberation from decision fatigue!

You may have already have heard about the 80/20 rule (In short, basically 20% of the factor contributes to the 80% of the outcome, and 80% of the factor is actually filler that serves any purpose 20% of the time.)

When it comes to our wardrobes, statics show that we tend to wear approx. 20% out of the 100% of the clothes that we own, 80% of the time. Even with all the choices, we always end up going for those few pieces, because of certain texture, color, or design - - something that makes us feel comfortable.

Maybe it'll be fun for you to take a count of how many pieces you have in your wardrobe, and then identify the number of your mostly worn pieces, and run a % analysis to see if 80/20 applies to you!

In this post, I'll use my outerwear as an  example.
I had about this many fall & winter outerwear around 2018. Short, medium, long, thin, thick, for work, for winter sport, etc., basically 1 for each sort of a cold-day occasion.
Based on my lifestyle at the time, I only needed a couple of basic coats work and everyday use and infrequently wore the others for rare occasions such as skiing because my kids were too little to go.
The everyday coats took up about 20% of the closet space, and the rare occasion outerwear took up 80%, when I use them the least. So in my case, the 80/20 rule was pretty true.

That took me to the realization of the fact that I was giving up my precious space, for 80% of unused items, and that no longer made sense, so letting go of them was more logical than keeping.

There's a choice of storing them away until "someday", but to me the holding-on-until-someday was going to be more stressful than needing to rebuy in the future (I didn't spend a ton to begin with, so replacement cost wouldn't be much either). I'm not really thinking about the monetary value, because both my husband and I have steady income, so the only thing that matters is choosing the approach that gives me more peace.

Another merit of letting go, or donating away these unused pieces, is that they'll be actually used buy people who need it more than I do, which is a favorable thing for these outerwear, because that's their purpose after all, to be worn.

So here were the 2 coats I decided to keep after purging. The colors and designs are very basic so they would go well with all my outfits at pretty much any occasion.

Keep in mind that these are photos from my lifestyle in 2018-2019, so as I write more about my journey, you may see some changes in the number of designs because there are constantly changes in life.

The key takeaway from this post, is that capsule wardrobe allows us to live based on the current lifestyle, not 5 years ago or hold onto clothes for 10 years later.

This is the identity of liberation that I've found.

Stay tuned for more inspirations!
