In the previous post, we talked about how to eliminate outerwear, now we'll go one level up, and work on tops.
Tops are probably the ones that occupy over 50% of our entire wardrobes. They come in all sorts of appealing colors, designs and textures, and we tend to fill up our collection with more pieces in a short period of time, thinking that we'll one day have the chance to wear them all.
The reality, is that we kindly routinely select the few certain pieces, even though we've prepared quite a lot of choices for ourselves (maybe choice of a few dozen or hundreds depending on the size of our spaces)
In this example, I'll share how I've tackled downsizing my tops.
The pictures are from 2018, where I got inspired the concept of minimalism, and minimalist wardrobes.
A minimalist's wardrobe is usually composed of basic pieces, because they're easy to be paired with bottom, shoes, accessories, etc. of any color/designs.
The first picture shows some of the tops I had, in different colors and designs (not my entire collection, just showing 9 to fit nicely in a picture) in 2018.
Because of the assortment, each time I create an outfit, I would need to think what to put on the bottom, and if going out, then additional decisions needed for shoes, bag and outerwear.
I'm writing this article in 2021, and would describe myself until 2018, as "not yet awakened."
After coming across the idea of minimalist wardrobe, with the help of of picture and video inspirations, I was intrigued, and felt "awakened."
I looked at my wardrobe, and saw mismatched colors and patterns,, most of them in the drawers, only because so I could fill up the compartments, I never thought about how I would pair each piece when I initially bought them. There were apparently ones still with tags that I bought a while ago, would I really ever get to wear them all before I getting new pieces? Even with all the choices I had, I would frequently fall into the I-have-nothing-to-wear situations.
I saw distraction, a person without a strong purpose - - I needed to rebuild my identity through a restructured wardrobe.
All of a sudden, these tops didn't feel like they belonged to me anymore, I was ready to convert to a capsule wardrobe, therefore bid farewell to those pieces that I wasn't responsible enough as their owner.
As a responsible owner of my clothes, I needed to change my habits, to give them enough attention by actually wearing them and maintaining them properly, rather than letting them sit in the dark for the next decade and be forgotten.
With a new awakened mind, it wasn't too hard to let go of my existing/old pieces.
As mentioned in the previous part, it's definitely a better idea for my unused items to be used by those who need them more.
The process was simple, I let go anything that were ill fitted, infrequently worn, colors/designs not to my liking, and I was left with basic/monochromatic ones, shown below, and I began to feel much more comfortable.
Not only would I now have less choices to select from, I could also apply the same principle onto my shoes, bags, and hats (More on those to follow in next posts.)
Again, these were just part of all the tops I had, I don't have pictures of the entire collection, they're just for me to share my process in a summarized format.
The process not only helped me identify my style, but also allowed me to bring the quantity to about 1/3. I cannot express how easier life has gotten by downsizing my tops to the ones I truly enjoy wearing, even with fewer pieces compared to before, I can proudly say that I always know exactly what I want to wear, and not fall for the nothing-to-wear phase any longer.
Stay tuned for more ideas!
