Generally speaking, I believe pants/trousers are relatively easier to downsize, compared to tops/shirts and other items.
One is more likely to remember another person's top/shirt, more than kind of pants/trousers they had.
Nonetheless, pants/trousers can still take up a lot of our wardrobe spaces as they can come in different designs, colors, textures, for various types of occasions/purposes.
When you downsize, consider your lifestyle first. If you prefer lots of outfit varieties for your occupation/lifestyle, then downsize by a little, and if your pants don't really need lots of attention, then you can downsize maybe more.
I did have a number of pants in different colors/designs, but since I work in an office sitting at a desk, I don't think my pants are noticed/remembered as much as my tops by anyone, nor do I even keep track of which pair I've worn on what day, so it's better that I downsize enough to relieve myself from decision fatigue and go for a simple wardrobe for easy outfit making.
So I began by taking out all the pants I had. Here are some of them that I had, that I took a picture of, to explain why I let go of them.
As you can see, they're all in different colors, and designs. The pants on the left and right look like ordinary pants, but with the tops I had, there were only a few that paired well with these colors. Also, I tend to do tops = lighter color, and bottom = darker color, because I feel like that's the right color balance. (If I did darker top, with lighter color bottom, it always felt something wasn't right.)
As for the pair in the middle, because it's got extra designs on it, it was even more difficult for me to pair, I probably only paired it with white shirt, and felt that there's not much significance in keeping it the entire year, if I only wore it once in a long while.
So these were my causes to let go of these pants.
