In this post, I'll explain how 16/8 intermittent fasting works.
Keep in mind that I'm an ordinary person, not a health related professional, so the writing is about how I've adopted the process based on what I've read and watched from various sources, with my personal results.
You can simply view my post as just another source, and practice it at your comfort level if you want to give it a try.
There are 24 hours in a day, the 16 from 16/8 indicates 16 hours of fasting, and 8 means the eating window.
Don't let the long hours of fasting scare you, take a look at the 24hr chart below. The fasting period actually includes our resting hours, therefore sleeping is part of fasting.
Doesn't that lift some burden off your shoulders?
Note: You're free to choose which hours you fast, and the frequency (daily, weekdays only, weekends only, etc). This clock is my version of fasting/eating hours. I start eating at 11am, and finish the last meal by 7pm.
It is said that it takes about 10 hours for food to get digested completely. (Side note, if that's the case, then it takes 3 meals x 10 hrs = 30 hrs to digest food that's eaten 3 times a day, which is actually beyond necessary because we only have 24 hrs in a day.)
Once we fast for 10 hrs, with no food left, guess what happens to our bodies?
This is one of the most astonishing things I've learned. One would imagine that without food, we're on a downhill of energy and stamina level. But that's not true.
After the 10hrs is up, our body actually turns on its survival mode, to generate mechanisms such as autophagy (a mechanism that recycles old cells into new energy, read more on Healthline) and growth hormone (promotes cell repair, metabolism, etc, read more on Healthline). These elements help rejuvenate our bodies and skin, and becomes a natural source of anti-aging.
After doing 1 year of 16/8 IF, I can confirm that it's applicable to me, I do feel the improvement of metabolism as well as see my skin getting healthier and no longer dry during winter (my lips used to chap during winter seasons, but it doesn't happen now that I fast, kind of amazing.) Another thing to note, is that I do fasting along with low carb diet and 1 hour workout every other day, which also contribute to metabolism improvement and healthier body making, that aids to even better results than just fasting alone.
Our bodies are packed with naturally powerful elements, that our race developed throughout hundreds of thousands of years of survival. It's definitely worthy a try if you haven't had the chance, if it doesn't work, you can always go back.
I'll share more details and benefits I experienced in upcoming posts, stay tuned!
